Plaid Brooch

Plaid Brooch

The Plaid Brooch is a highly decorative accessory for the traditional kilt attire.

In the days of the highland clans, a Scotsman would wear his wealth, this would mean that his attire would be adorned with extravagant adornments such as a plaid brooch, a kilt pin, a belt buckle, a sporran, and a sgian dubh.

It is usually made of metal, often silver or pewter but sometimes bronze or some other material. Brooches are frequently decorated with or without gemstones and are typically used for an accessory on a jacket but most commonly as a fastener for a fly plaid.

The earliest known brooches are from the bronze age. Brooches have been used by many cultures, including the Celts.

In the use of fastening a fly plaid to a highlanders jacket, it is done in this manner; the tartan cloth matching the kilt worn, is placed over the left shoulder and fastened in front of the shoulder with the adorning plaid brooch. Commonly worn during evening and for formal events such as wedding, and other celebrations.

Today plaid brooches come in many shapes and designs, ranging from a simple Celtic Knot to intricate and complex designs, with various gemstones for color and character.
