Casual Kilts
Casual kilts have a few minor changes from a “traditional” kilt, at first glance they appear the same.
They come in the same array of tartans, they are pleated the same way, what makes a kilt a casual one?
A casual kilt has 2 distinct variations from the traditional kilt, they are the amount of tartan material and the length of the kilt.
As the name says it all the casual kilt is that a casual garment, most kilts are worn to high fashion, and large functions such as weddings, and funerals, or military honors, depending on your regiment.
The casual kilts are made from 5 yards or meters of Tartan, where traditional ones are typically 8 yards. These 5 yard kilts are lighter and usually made from 10oz weight tartan. This give the kilts the lighter casual feel,
The second variation is in the length, with a traditional kilt you will measure the natural waist, hips, hip to knee and the “rise” this rise is missing form the casual kilts. The “rise' is the amount of kilt that will be above the hip bone to you natural waist, for most traditional kilt wearers this is 2 inches(5cm)
Most folks that wear a casual kilt will wear a more relaxed attire, I wear mine just like the ones you see in the images of Scotland and the hikers, trekking through the Moors with Highland Sweater and kilt hose worn loose around the ankles, and no outfit would be complete without the “ Day” Sporran, typically made of Leather.
