With this it is good for us to reach back in time and explore our culture, and the Scots have a colorful past.
With the ancient Clans each having it's own distinct pattern for identification, this has brought the Scots into a wonderful world of ”the plaid”.
As mentioned the clans could be identified by the colors and pattern of their Tartan, the MacDonald's could be from several places in Scotland, and each one would be identified by the plaid in the kilts, the MacDonald of Clanranald have their tartan as do the MacDonald's of the Isles, both very different but to each Clan goes the tartan.
Traditional Kilts come in 3 weights of material 10oz, 13oz, and the heavier 16oz, and Each Clan can have 3 variations of their tartan, the Ancient, Modern, and Weathered. These variations in the tartan can be subtle or quite drastic in the color variants. The Ancient and Weathered are of a softer hue, the Weathered version will have a washed out fade effect on the coloring, while the Modern is typically quite bold and bright in the colorings.
It is not uncommon to have a kilt of these 3 variations, to show your Family Clan in full color.
The traditional kilts can be worn as a very formal outfit with a Prince Charlie or Argyll jacket, no formal outfit would be complete without a Dress Sporran , made of animal fur and leather.
Or a more informal look can be had with a Jackobite or Kilt shirt, or Arran Sweater, day Sporran, with the informal look it is common to wear a low hiker style footwear with the kilt hose worn loosely around the ankles.
